DIY DO’s and DON’Ts
Most homeowners are unaware of how dangerous a garage door can be.
In this age of DIY, we all love to tackle tasks ourselves and finish our home projects, but safety is an important issue.
We have put together a list of DO’s and DON’Ts to keep your tasks smooth and safe.
When dealing with garage doors, most homeowners don't realize how dangerous a garage door can be.
We have put together a comprehensive dos and DON’T's about garage doors.
Biggest Door in your home deserves pre-caution:
A garage door is the largest moving object in the home. Proper installation, operation, maintenance, and testing of the garage door and electronic opener are necessary to provide safe, trouble-free operation. An improperly adjusted garage door or electronic opener can exert deadly force when the door closes. This could lead to serious injury or death from being hit by a closing garage door or from being trapped under the door.
Safety Tips
A few simple precautions can protect your family and friends from potential harm. Please take a few minutes to read the following safety and maintenance tips:
DO’s:
DO check the owner’s manual of your motor.
The instructions are tailored to each brand and model, so make sure you consult this pamphlet for basic troubleshooting and questions. Once you have found the right manual, go through and check the operation of your door and opener.
DO keep your wall keypad out of children’s reach and away from moving parts.
Make sure there are at least 5 ft, off the floor.
Mount and use the buttons where you can clearly see your garage door moving.
DO discuss garage door safety with your children.
Garage door openers are not toys. Careless operation and allowing kids to play with garage door controls can lead to tragic results. Explain the danger of being trapped under the door.
DO keep hands and fingers clear of section joints, hinges, track, springs and other moving parts.
Contact with a moving door or its hardware could cause serious injury. These injuries can also happen with garage doors that don't have automatic openers.
DO have a service technician perform an annual maintenance and inspection.
Garage door springs, cables, brackets, and other attached hardware, should only be adjusted by a professional. Similar to what you would do with your car, we call this a tune-up in the garage door business. This annual maintenance keeps your door and motor operating more efficiently, safely, and promotes the life of the door, ultimately saving you money in the long run.
DO take a few minutes to inspect and test your entire garage door system.
Safety is everyone's business, so make sure your garage door and opener are part of your home’s safety checklist.
Take a monthly inspection and test and make it part of your regular routine.
DO regularly lubricate the moving parts of the door.
Hinges are the main parts needing lubrication.
DO NOT lubricate plastic parts such as plastic rollers and plastic idler bearings.
Consult the door owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendation.
DO perform a monthly visual inspection
Look at the garage door springs, cables, rollers, pulleys, and other door hardware for signs of wear. If you suspect problems, have a qualified person make repairs.
DON’Ts
DON’T stand OR walk under a moving door!
We all get in a hurry to get to where we need to go, but it’s not safe to run underneath your garage door as it’s moving.
DON’T let kids or adults play "beat the door."
It is dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. Adults should set a good example. Know how to locate and use the emergency release, in case someone is pinned by the door.
DON’T repair, adjust OR replace a torsion spring yourself
As it states in our spring repair section, this is a very dangerous job and needs proper tools and training. Use a professional only!
